What should we actually do?

The Table is the half of this publication that isn't ours. Send a proposal — a specific action, argued from evidence — and if it holds up we publish it with your name on it.

This month's open question

Housing is a $75 billion line item with no identified funder, no commercial buyer and no announced state programme. What is the first mechanism that should exist — and who would have to move first?

Answers published in the next issue. 400–800 words, or a single well-argued paragraph if that is all it takes.

What we publish

  1. Answer one question. Not "thoughts on reconstruction" — one question, named at the top.
  2. Propose one action. Something a named actor could start doing. "The international community should care more" is not an action.
  3. Bring at least one source. A figure, a document, a date. We check every number before it goes up, and we will come back to you if one does not hold.
  4. Write from where you stand. A contractor in Homs, an engineer in Berlin, a donor officer — say which. Standpoint is context, not bias.
  5. 400 to 800 words. Arabic or English. We do not translate submissions without asking you first.

What we don't publish

  • Factional or sectarian argument, in any direction.
  • Anonymous claims about named individuals.
  • Anything that reads as a press release for a company or a ministry.
  • Proposals whose central figure we cannot source.

These aren't formalities. Proposals that break them get declined, with the reason.
